Social Changes Occurring Around Kenny/a Sampling of Storylines’ Settings
3) Anti-Vietnam War Movement
Even though the Vietnam War had its meager beginnings in the 1950s, the conflict became a full-fledged U.S. dynamic in the 1960s (after we “tapped in” for the French in that part of Asia). In addition to revealing problems that the U.S. administration had with honesty & the American public, the war revealed other societal inequities.
Principal among these was a status disparity & the military draft really helped to expose this. Whereas affluent young men could avoid service in a number of ways (dodge to Canada, remain in college, etc.), poor men didn’t have these options. So they were more apt to have to deal with that conflict’s lingering problems.
Protests occurred all over America, so it will be easy to place Kenny & Puppy in the midst of a challenging situation.
Attitudes—in society & in the media (again)—didn’t start to change until the latter half of the decade. With more reporters showing what was actually happening inside Vietnam & social movement leaders’ perspectives, the American public’s attitude turned against the war.
